Patent Strategies

How to enter the patent world strategically and economically

Russell Jeide, of Knobbe Martens, will continue our IP Series of workshops regarding intellectual property for business, with a focus this month on patents. He will cover, among other things:

• When/where to file for a patent
• Provisional vs. non-provisional
• Costs
• Changes to patent law as a result of the AIA
• First to file
• International (PCT)?
• 30 months, but expensive and maybe unnecessary

Evaluating the patent landscape in your field

• Should you even look?
• How/where to search
• Patent specification vs. claims
• Published apps vs. issued patents
• Patentability vs. infringement vs. invalidation
• When to talk to a searcher/attorney (and how to choose the right one)

Please register for the session you plan to attend, so we can plan accordingly.  If we don’t get at least a half dozen signups in advance for any of our workshops, we will cancel that workshop and send an email notification and refund to those who did pre-register. So pre-register!!!!

Due to parking and other challenges with holding a session on the UCR campus, I encourage students, faculty and other people who are already on campus to attend the afternoon meeting. If you do want to attend, check the UCR map for parking. I recommend lot 6 or 10, where you can pay by the hour. That meeting is at the University Office Building, Suite 210 (second floor.)

If you come to the Murrieta event, there is plenty of free parking. Parking for the ExCITE event is available in the Law Library parking lot on Lemon Street across from ExCITE. (There is two hour free parking for the public.) Or you can park in a city parking lot – the first 90 minutes are free. Parking meters in front require that you pay for the first hour, then they turn off at 6 pm.

We need to have at least 6 registrations at each location – if we don’t get enough, we will have to cancel!
So please pre-register if you plan to come!
